How the Grip Can Influence Impact

One of the most important parts of hitting consistent golf shots is understanding how your grip can influence what happens through impact.

You have to be very careful with your grip because, if it is positioned incorrectly, it can have a significant effect on how you strike the golf ball.

One example I see regularly is golfers who tend to flip their hands through impact, often resulting in thin shots or tops. In many cases, the grip can be contributing to this movement.

A common grip combination I see is a strong left hand, where the left hand is positioned too far to the right, combined with a weak right hand, where the right hand is positioned too far to the left.

This combination can create a hand and arm structure that makes it difficult to maintain the correct wrist angles through impact and can encourage the hands to flip through the ball.

A great checkpoint for your grip is to look at the lines created between your thumb and index finger on both hands.

Ideally, these lines should point towards your right shoulder for a right hander (opposite for a left hander)

When the grip is positioned this way, it allows the right arm to soften more naturally and helps create the correct wrist angles through impact.

It also allows your hands to stay more in front of the clubface rather than allowing the right hand to become too dominant.

When the right hand is positioned too much on top, it can cause the right arm to push out towards the ball, which can encourage a flipping motion through impact.

This is why the grip is such an important part of improving your ball striking. Sometimes what looks like an impact problem can actually begin with how you are holding the golf club.

Before making major changes to your swing, it is worth checking your grip and making sure your hands are positioned correctly.

A simple change to your grip can sometimes make a significant difference to what happens through impact.
