We've all been there where we just can't figure out what is happening in our swing. When this occurs, the best thing you can do is go back to basics and start from the ground-up to fix the problem. This means starting with the Basic Fundamentals and working on the First Position of the golf swing. The majority of times when we go back to basics and master the finer aspects of the swing, many of our bad habits start to fix themselves.
In terms of fixing the fundamentals, the first aspect I would get right would be alignment. Just place two alignment sticks on the ground, one for your clubface which should point directly at your target and one for your body which should point parallel left of your target. Also ensure your shoulders, hips, knees and feet all point parallel left as well. Check the clubface by making sure that it sits perpendicular to the alignment stick that's pointed at the target.
The next part is ensuring you stand at the right distance from the ball. Ensure approximately that you stand around a handspan from the butt end of the club. Also place the ball for the irons from 9 iron down to 4 iron just forward of centre. You can make certain of this by placing a third stick or club perpendicular to the alignment stick that's situated along your feet line. Therefore every time you swing, you will guarantee that you will be set up in the exact same position each time.
Also ensure you tilt your spine angle at 45 degrees with a straight back. In terms of the grip, ensure you direct your 'V's toward your right shoulder. (The V's are the lines between your thumb and index finger). Lastly just ensure that your left hip is in line with your left shoulder. You can do this by bumping your left hip laterally to the left by two inches. Now In terms of the first position, just ensure that during the takeaway when the club reaches parallel to the ground, the club head and the hands form a straight line. You want to also have the 'toe' of the club pointing roughly to the sky.
When you start with the fixing your fundamentals followed by mastering your first position, you will find in majority of cases that your swing will improve straight away. I would also recommend if you have been struggling for a while that you start with swings just to hip height on the backswing and through swing until you feel comfortable lengthening the swing.
