What Drills Will Make You An Elite Ball Striker??

Once you've developed your game up to an intermediate standard, you might be asking yourself what you can do to move to the elite level. First of all if you're not seeing a coach, I would recommend doing this as a starter to ensure you're applying the correct swing drills suited for your game. Secondly and critically, you must be excellent in being able to control your low point on a consistent basis.

The first step in controlling low point is understanding how the body moves throughout the swing. The best drill for this is simply resting your glutes on a chair and feel your glutes stay on the chair right up until impact. The key is to have your right glute connected with the chair at the top of the swing and the left glute at impact. Once you strike the ball, you can then stand tall to finish the golf swing. Once you embed this movement, you will be able to deliver the shaft at the correct angle each time.

The next step is controlling swing path. The best drill is simply placing an alignment stick around three metres behind the ball on a 45 degree angle. You then want to practice having the club match the alignment stick at parallel to the ground on the backswing and the downswing. If you can do this, your angle of attack and swing direction will begin to be very consistent.

Lastly you want to ensure that you strike the ball first before the ground at impact. One of the best ways of doing this, is simply placing a towel around a handspan behind the ball and practice contacting the ball after the towel. I would use a short club to try this such as a PW up to an 8 iron. If you do hit the towel first, you will know that you're bottoming out too early. Once you practice this repeatedly, you will engrain the feeling of compression where the club is contacting the ball first followed by the grass.
