How Do I Know What Clubs To Use When I first Play Golf??

When you first play golf, it might feel overwhelming trying to understand which clubs to use in what scenario. If you have a full set and you head to the first tee, you may also feel pressure using clubs that seem intimidating to swing. This is definitely the case particularly if you're playing with someone who is quite experienced. One of the most important things to remember when you are beginning to play, is only uses clubs that you feel confident with swinging. Therefore, if you prefer to use your 7 iron or even a PW at the beginning of the hole then just do this rather than feeling like you have to use your Driver.

In fact, what I recommend for most new golfers is just start with a 7 iron for most shots off the tee and on the fairway. Once you feel comfortable with this club, you then start using longer clubs. One big mistake that a lot of new golfers make when playing from the fairway is that they try using long clubs such as the 3 wood and hybrid. These clubs are some of the hardest to use as they are quite long with very little loft. Therefore, your swing has to be quite proficient to even be able to use these clubs. Just start with the 7 iron and then when your swing becomes more dialled, you can then start using these longer clubs with more regularity.

Now a quick rundown of what the clubs in your bag mean. Firstly, the longest club, the driver is mainly used when teeing off. The 3 wood and the hybrid are used for longer shots when on the fairway. You then have your numbered clubs typically starting with the 4 iron all the way down to a 9 iron. Just remember the lower the number, the further the ball will go. You then have your short clubs which include your PW and SW. these clubs are used when you get closer to the green. The putter is used when you're on the green or even just off depending on your lie.

Now one of the most important parts to becoming better at golf is hitting shots at the desired distance. Now of course when your first start, your distances my vary because of trying to settle into your swing. But once you reach some level of consistency, just start taking note of how far your 7 iron goes. You can do this by using an app, range finder or even using distance markers on the course. Once you work out your distance with a 7 iron you can then work out the distance of most other clubs. This is because each club will go around ten metres apart. For example if you hit your 7 iron 100m, your 8 iron will go 90 and 6 iron will go 110m.
