Often times I will have students who have just started golf ask how they can go about quickly improving in golf. The answer to this really comes down to whether they commit to the following: One whether they intend to practice weekly and two whether they are intending to get frequent golf instruction. If you are dedicated in doing these two actions, you can really improve within the first three months and start playing in upcoming Corporate Days or socially with friends.
In terms of golf instruction, the first element will always be to practice the fundamentals. These fundamentals include the correct grip, posture, ball position and set-up. The first three lessons will really be about ensuring you understand how to replicate these fundamentals each time. Doing 5-10 mins mirror work every couple of days will also be very beneficial in learning these fundamentals and speeding up the process.
Once you learn the fundamentals, then it will come down to working on specific drills for your movement. One of the best drills is placing a club behind your shoulders or in front, then tilting to 45 degrees to form a golf posture. You then want to look straight ahead and move your left shoulder under the chin whilst the head stays in the same spot. What you will find is that when your left shoulder moves under your chin, the hips will also start to move. You want to feel as though you're in a confined space and imagining you have a wall on either side of your feet. The backswing should just be a turn of your body.
On the downswing you then want to imagine the wall on the left side of your foot and practicing breaking through the wall by about 2 to 3 inches so that you start to shift your weight. You want to feel as though the weight is shifting to the left foot whilst your body starts turning. The end result will be that you have 100% of weight on your front foot with your chest, hips and back foot facing the target. A good test to see if you have shifted all your weight to the front is trying to lift the right foot and see if you fall backwards. If you don't, you have done the movement properly.
If you practice this drill and apply to your real swing, you will definitely start fast-tracking your progress!
