How To Master The Downswing

One of the most important movements in the golf swing happens during the transition from the backswing into the downswing. If you watch the best players in the world, you'll notice that their lower body starts the downswing before their upper body. This sequence helps create power, improves consistency, and allows the club to approach the ball from a much better position.
One of the most common faults I see is golfers spinning their upper body too early from the top of the backswing. When this happens, the shoulders and chest dominate the downswing, causing the club to move out in front of the body. This often leads to an over-the-top swing path, resulting in pulls, slices, and a loss of power.
A simple but highly effective drill to improve your transition is the step-through drill. Start with your feet positioned close together and make a backswing as normal. Once you reach the top, pause briefly and keep your head and upper body as still as possible. From there, take a small step towards the target with your left foot while keeping your upper body quiet. This movement encourages the lower body to initiate the downswing correctly.
After taking the step, allow your body to rotate through the ball and finish with all of your weight on your front foot facing the target. This drill teaches the correct sequence of movement and helps you feel how the lower body should lead the downswing.
Once you're comfortable with the drill, move back to your normal stance. Make a backswing, pause at the top, and then focus on a slight lateral bump of your left hip towards the target before rotating through the shot. This small shift is crucial. Many golfers begin rotating immediately from the top without first moving pressure into their lead side, which can make the downswing steep and inefficient.
As you progress, blend these movements into your full swing. Feel the lower body initiate the downswing with a subtle shift towards the target, followed by rotation through impact. When performed correctly, this creates better sequencing, improved club path, and more consistent ball striking.
