Sequencing Is Key!!

Sequencing in the golf swing is key to ensure consistency of strike but what does it actually mean?? Sequencing is simply how the upper and lower half work together throughout the swing. The most important part in sequencing is the downswing. The two most common errors with sequencing is when the lower half slides too much on the downswing leaving the upper half behind and vice versa with the upper half moving forward causing the lower half to be passive.

The correct sequence on the downswing is when the lower half initiates followed by the upper half. You want to feel as though the left hip bumps slightly to the left around two to 3 inches first followed by the upper half moving through the ball. There is though one step further to ensure they are combining correctly so that your hands start to naturally work in the correct position at impact. After you bump to the left with the hip, you then need to feel as though you're turning to the left with your lower half quite quickly in order to allow the upper half to come through the ball.

Once you can create this sensation, you will feel as though you're staying on top of the ball through impact. This will then allow you to have the hands in front of the clubface through the hitting area. This will not only significantly improve your strike but also control trajectory as the more you're on top of the ball, the more you can control hand position at impact. An example that you're not sequencing correctly is when you clearly notice that your divot pattern tends to be behind the ball at impact. The correct divot pattern is when the grass gets struck slightly forward of the ball. Meaning the ball gets hit first followed by the grass.

One of the best drills to ensure correct sequencing is the one where you grip an alignment stick along with your club at set-up. Have the alignment stick positioned against your left side. The goal then is to try and not have the alignment stick not hit your body at impact (It can though after impact). If you're not sequencing right, you will feel the alignment stick contact your body through the strike. By having the alignment stick not hit your body, it will ensure your lower half is clearing out of the way early on the downswing, allowing the upper half to come through with the hands staying in front of the clubface.
