What Is The Quickest Way To Stop Slicing??

The biggest reason people come in for lessons is to stop the slice. This is because the majority of people who come in for lessons are beginner to intermediate level. The reason why most people slice when developing their game is simply because we grip the club with our hands, therefore activating muscles in the upper half before we swing. This in turn leads to most people being too upper half dominant through the swing and hence throwing the club away from the body on the downswing, causing an out to in path resulting in a slice.

The first step in overcoming the slice is the grip. When gripping the club, you firstly want to place the club in your left hand on the line just below the pinkie. You then want to angle the club to the middle of your index finger. It's now important that when you place the left hand on the club that the line formed between the index finger and thumb are pointed at the right shoulder. With the right hand you then want to have the club run through the middle of your fingers. Again, you want to have the line between your index finger and thumb pointed at the right shoulder. I would then overlap your right pinkie over the left index finger. You could also interlock which means placing the right pinkie underneath the left index finger. The most important check mark out of this, is to ensure both of your lines between the index fingers and thumbs of both hands are pointed at the right shoulder (Opposite for left handers). This will ensure the club rotates correctly through the ball.

The next step is simply alignment. Whenever you practice just ensure you place two clubs on the ground, one for the clubface and one for the body. Place the one for the clubface on the other side of the ball pointing directly at the target. Place the other on your feet line pointing just left of the target. The goal is to have them parallel to each other. Once these are in place, just ensure every time you set up that the clubface is perpendicular to the club beside the ball and that the feet are parallel to the nearest club. You also want to have not only the feet parallel to the target, but the shoulders, knees and hips. Once you can align like this, your body will start to rotate correctly instead of only using your upper half and falling into that slice pattern.

Thirdly once the above is in place, is learning to swing around the body on a 45 degree angle. The best way is placing an alignment stick directly behind the ball at a 45 degree angle. Start with a short iron such as a PW or 9 iron. You then want to ensure that you swing under the stick on the backswing and downswing. This will then create a plane that ensures you hit more from the inside of the ball instead of the outside the ball which causes that slice.
