Narrow The Stance For Better Connection!!

Narrowing the stance can be very useful for those who have a tendency to sway their body through the swing. It is especially useful for those who have just started golf as the biggest issue they have when starting is too much movement mainly caused by excessive head movement. Having the feet closer together forces your body to start turning whilst keeping your head more on top of the ball. This results in greater consistency of strike.


In addition to having the feet closer together, I will often tell my students that the backswing is very much like turning within a 'phone box' or a confined space. You want to feel as though your left shoulder is turning under your chin as well hips turning to 45 degrees. Now in order to stay within this 'phone box' you will also feel that you need to hinge your wrists. The correct hinge should be 90 degrees upon completion of the backswing.


Sometimes also it could be very useful to not only use this narrow stance as a practice drill but also on the course. It suited my game very well as my tendency was to sway a little too much on the downswing, causing my upper half to lag behind. The narrower my stance, the more I was able to turn left through impact causing also my upper half to stay more on top of the ball. This improved position enabled me then to be able to control the strike and therefore trajectory.


Just ensure when you're having your feet together that it's not only about turning on the way back and through. You will still need to make sure there is sequence on the downswing. After you've completed your backswing, just ensure that you bump your left hip laterally by about two inches to the left followed by transferring your weight through the ball whilst turning.
