The Golf Turn Is Like Passing A Heavy Ball!!

One of the biggest areas that students can struggle with is understanding how to turn their body. In most cases when people begin playing, they tend to sway too much off the ball without turning. This can cause a multitude of problems during the swing including lack of power, swinging 'over the top' and 'topping'. The best way to think about the golf swing when it relates to understanding how to turn the body whilst keeping stable, is feeling what it's like to pass a heavy ball to someone next to you..

When something is quite heavy, we will tend to engage the bigger muscles and thus use more of our hips, abs and shoulders. Having someone next to you, you will be forced to turn your hips in order to pass the ball to them. Also what you will find is that you won't tend to sway too much otherwise you will lose your stability and the power in the throw. What you will also find is that you will improve your sequence. Meaning in order to pass the ball from the ground, you will feel you need to initiate with your upper half first followed by the rotation of the lower half. This is exactly the motion in the swing.

The correct way to turn in the swing is firstly placing pressure inside the right foot and ensuring you maintain this pressure whilst you turn your right hip back. You need to try and do this without pushing your left hip toward the target. I would recommend practicing in front of a mirror and monitoring your movement. The left hip can stay roughly in the same position or move a little to the right as the right hip moves behind you. Also ensure the head is staying on the same angle for the ideal hip movement.

One of the best drills to use when trying to add more turn in your swing is hitting balls with your feet close together. The closer they are to each other, the easier it will feel to turn your body. Also imagine you're swinging within an enclosed space in order for the body to remain stable whilst turning. During the downswing however try still feel as though you're moving all your weight to the left foot.
